Your vs You're. People always mess this up and I swear I want to die everytime I see it. If something belongs to someone it is theirs and therefore you would use 'your', as in 'it's your turn to go shopping.' When someone is something it is 'you're' as in 'you're utterly and completely stupid and can I smack you?'
There vs Their vs They're. 'There' is a location, as in 'It's over there'. 'Their' is a possessive in regards to two or more persons, as in 'That's their dog.' Lastly, 'They're' is a contraction of 'they are' which is much like 'you're' in that it is describing something that 'they' are, as in 'They're very stupid.'
Then vs Than. Not knowing the difference between 'then' and 'than'... If I weigh greater than you, then maybe I'm overweight or perhaps you're too skinny... I mean, seriously, they even sound different.
The Three Two/Too/Tos. Right. So. Yeah. I don't know how people manage to confuse these so often, but they do, so it must be mentioned. Two as in the number, which should always be spelled out unless it is apart of the number 200. Too as in an amount or in addition to, as in 'I am too full to eat anymore' or 'I'll go to the store, too.' Lastly, 'to' as in a location or in reference to an action. 'I am going to the store today' or 'I am going to fix it.' See? It's not that hard.
A vs An. People don't seem to realise that you use 'a' when the word following it starts with a consanent, as in 'I will take a walk'. 'An' when the word following starts with a vowel or vowel sound, as in 'In an hour, I will go shopping.' Or 'She is an interesting person.'
Its vs It's. Now this one is a hard one that I've had issues with in the past before my old beta explained it all to me. 'Its' is possessive as in 'The car's paint is what colour? Its paint is green.' 'It's' is a contraction of 'it is', as in 'It's not yours, it's mine.'
Plural vs Possessive. Because somehow people don't get the difference between something that belongs to someone and something that is many. When you have a noun followed directly by 's it belongs to someone as in 'Geny's computer isn't working.' With the plural there is no apostrphe, as in 'The cookies are done.'
Tense Issues. For whatever reason, a lot of people have trouble with sticking to one tense. I prefer past tense in narration because it sounds so much better. I can handle present tense if the author doesn't fluxuate between past, present, and future. And you really should never write in future tense unless it's something a character is planning on doing.
Awkward sentences. This happens to everyone. People have trouble wording a sentence and it comes out awkward but they don't re-read their work and can't catch said awkward sentences and fix them! Or else they don't have a beta.
Contractions. People don't seem to understand that when you see ' it generally means that there is more to it. So for example, the word 'm'lady' is a contraction of 'my lady' or the word 'ma'am' which is a contraction of 'madame'.
Narrarating with slang. Unless the narrator has an actual personality and isn't just flat and omnitent, then it should never use words like 'wanna' and 'gotta'. And if the narrator does have a pesonality words like that still shouldn't be used.
Lack of Punctuation or Moronic and Incorrect Use of Punctuation. Periods, commas, colons, semi-colans, and apostrophes are all very important. It's also important to remember that a statement requires a period, a question a question mark and an exclamation an exclamation point.
The Weird Ways People Describe Orfices. The only thing that I can think of is when people refer to anyone's mouth as a 'cavern'. A 'wet cavern', a 'hot cavern', and so on. It's rather annoying thinking that someone's tongue is a spludunker entering a cavern for an adventure as a really bad metaphor. Especially when 'cavern' is used and used and used to the point of abnoxious overuse. This isn't a bad prono, it's fanfiction. I'm not reading 'The Hot Cavern of Love', I'm reading fanfiction.
The Spelling Fauxpaux or When a Good Story Becomes Trash. 'Cum.' I hate that spelling so much. Oh the gods have mercy on me, how I hate it. I don't want to feel like I'm reading trash. I don't generally think I read trash, but when I see the word 'cum' spelled in such a vulgar way, I twitch. It's just so ugly and it doesn't sound right when spelled this way (don't ask me how spelling it 'come' makes it sound different and more appealing but it does). 'Cum' is just so trashy. And I'm sorry, but if you're too lazy to add an 'e' (and obviously change the 'u' to an 'o'), then something is wrong. All in all, I don't think an author thinks their story is trash, so please, help the world of readers think that way too by not using 'cum' and using 'come'. Classy, not trashy.
People writing fanfiction from manga/anime and switching the last and first name around so that the first name is first. That's not how they do it in Japan.
People refering to Sasuke as 'the raven' over and over and over again. It makes me twitch. Come up with something else once in a while, please!
R.A.V.E.N= Remeber: Affect, Verb. Effect, Noun. This is something I have trouble with and I found this little helpful tip to remember in some book at Boreder's. So, remember that and you'll be good.
PWP=Porn Without Plot. Because it's pointless.
Harry/Ginny. Can you say 'gross'?
SasuSaku. Because, seriously, are we delusional?
NaruSaku. Um... I think I've already said it.
People who place thought in // or / or () or... and the list goes on. All you need to do is italisize and, if it's necessary, say who thought it. You don't need to bold, you don't need symbols, just say 'blahblahblibityblah, so and so thought/mused/wondered/etc.' And if you say they thought and use " " then something is wrong because unless they are thinking outloud it shouldn't be in quotations as that is for dialogue/monologues.
People who can't accept helpful criticism.
People who say they want to improve, but upon recieving said helpful critiscim do nothing to improve.
When you don't type out the whole number. Numbers one-hundred and lower are supposed to be written. I specifically remember my english teacher telling my class this in tenth grade. It is something I will never forget. If you are writing a story, take your time and spell out the word 'ten' or 'one' or even 'ninety-nine' because if you're too lazy to do that, then you probably are too lazy to do a lot of other grammatically correct things.
Chatspeak. Especially when used in stories. I mean, seriously, what drug are you on that makes it okay to write that way?
Stupidity.
People who think they are above needing a beta. I don't care how good you are or how good you think you are, everyone should have a beta. Everyone needs a beta. We all make mistakes and having one helps prevent/lessen/and so forth that. JKRowling didn't write Harry Potter and immediately get it published. She has editors who read it and find errors and yet, somehow there are still errors. Why? Because even betas need betas! So remember folks, get a beta and love your beta. Hell, get two or three. It makes reading fanfiction so much easier and you might learn something.
People who use the excuse 'I didn't have time to fix this/find a beta/go over/etc.' That's a load of waffle. If you don't have time to go over your work, fix an error, or find a beta then how do you have time to write? It's not that hard. If you can't fix something right away, then fix it another time. If you don't go over something before posting... well that's just stupid. And if you can't take time out of your busy schedule to find a beta, but somehow still manage to write, then there is probably no hope anyway, especially when there are sites dedicated to finding betas.
